Avey Tare Discusses "Eucalyptus"

Scent is not often a word you hear when discussing music, that is unless it's with David Portner, aka Avey Tare. The Animal Collective singer's second solo album, Eucalyptus, is filled with the flowering tree's smell, which covers the Southern California landscape. Portner ties his memories of Los Angeles and the making of this record to that floral aroma.
In order to bring Eucalyptus to life, Avey Tare got together with old friend Eyvind Kang who brought a chamber orchestra in on the project. Woodwinds fill the spaces between Portner's words throughout the record, giving the sounds a natural water-like flow, which turn out to be another two of the artist's themes.
ARTISTdirect's Christopher Friedmann caught up with Avey Tare to discuss his new solo album, learn about the thoughts behind the musician's words, and to find out the role Los Angeles played in the record's creation.
